Original Sin and The Immaculate Conception
Answer: By Deborah Mullins
Does it state anywhere in the Bible that the Virgin Mary was born without original sin? What the Immaculate Conception? Does it state that Mary was the Immaculate Conception? I need to know what chapter and verse.
Your questions included references to the Virgin Mary and the Immaculate Conception. I have looked up all references to the conception of Jesus and the references to Mary, his mother. If you read Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 1:26-38, you will read the full account of the conception of Jesus.
In order to refresh my memory, I looked up the terms Immaculate Conception in my old catholic missal and found that it referred to Mary's having been born without original sin and having lived in a state of grace until the birth of Jesus. However, this reference will not be found in the bible. I have the catholic version of the bible, King James, NIV and the New American Standard translations of the bible. None of these contain any reference to original sin being held accounted to anyone. It is true that Adam and Eve sinned in the garden of Eden and were forever banished from walking and talking with God. For this reason women were always to undergo the pain of childbirth and men would have to work hard in the fields for the food for their families, ending in a physical death, returning to the dust from which we have come. This was the price that we were to pay for that "original sin".
If you reread Genesis 3:13-19, you will find no reference to the "original sin" that Mary would have to be free of. We were doomed to commit sin and be forever tempted by the serpent, but we were also blessed with Jesus' sacrifice on the cross that gave us an avenue for forgiveness of those sins, if we are willing to follow all of his commandments.
