Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit
Don A. Raines
"Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth: for he hath not another to help him up. Against, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cored is not quickly broken." (Eccl. 4:9-12)
Unity is powerful! Division is destructive. It was absurd to accuse Jesus of casting out devils by the devil's power! Besides, Jesus makes it very clear in verse 27 that he was stronger than the devil. He (Jesus) entered into the strong man's house (Satan) and bound him. Now he is taking back the spoil of human souls that the devil had taken at his will since the beginning.
In verses 28-30, Jesus points out the danger of the position they had taken. Blasphemy is defined by Vines Expository Dictionary as: "speaking against; to speak contemptuously against God or something holy." Vine also explains that what Jesus is saying in Mark 3 is that anyone with the evidence of the Lord's power before their eyes and still declares it to be satanic, has exhibited a condition of heart beyond divine illumination and are therefore hopeless. When you reject the proof and power of God, you reject all hope of salvation, because, "without faith it is impossible to be pleasing to God. For he that cometh to him must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Hebrews 11:6)
So, can people today blaspheme the Holy Spirit in the same
way as these did in Mark 3? No. At least not to the same degree. The reason is that the
Holy Spirit is not working in the same miraculous way as He did in the first century.
However, John tells us in John 20: 30-31, that the miracles that were
done be Jesus were recorded so we would believe and thereby be saved. Never the less, if
people reject the Bible, which is the work of the Spirit, (John 6: 63),
they reject God's power to save them (Romans 1:16). What if someone does
blaspheme the Bible, then later repents? Can they be saved? The answer is yes!
